Construction of a Home – Insulation, Glazing and Ducted Aircon

Narangba Project

We’re standing in the garage at the moment and as you can see the walls and ceilings are insulated.   Insulation isn’t a massive expense and definitely should be something you look at installing throughout a new home or major renovation.  Insulation helps with cooling and heating, as well as the acoustics of your home.

In each room we place a lot of importance on the windows and doors.  There is a lot to choose from as far as types, glazing and colours.  We are in the main living area of this house and these large stacker doors were installed with the support of a big steel beam above.

These doors slide out from the centre to the sides and either side of them you have a set of louvres for airflow.  In this home there are also electric motorised louvres above head. These windows will all help with passive airflow to the home.  The fixed panel window in the middle ensures an unobstructed view to outside.

Another type of window that gets used often is a kitchen window splashback, as opposed to using coloured glass or tiling.  One of our favourite windows in this home is the large gas strutted window.  This window is as big as you’re going to get, and it will open all the way up and act like an awning on the outside.

This home also has a bi-fold door in aluminium.  These doors do also come in timber, but the benefit of aluminium includes not having to adjust them over time, where timber shrinks and swells with the fluctuation of temperature and humidity.

Another aspect of all new builds and major renovations is air conditioning.  You can do your best with passive airflow using windows and louvres, but on the really hot Queensland days, you will want to consider air-conditioning.

With smaller areas throughout a home, you can use a split system unit.  But with a large home, it is more economical to go with a big ducted system.  In this case we have a rake ceiling separating the two wings of the house, so we have gone with two ducted systems.  One unit will cover the bedrooms and the other will cover the office and media room.  You can see the vents have been put up high so the air will flow down into the main living room and down the hallway is the return air, tucked away so you can’t see it.

We hope you enjoyed this insulation, glazing and ducted aircon video!
